SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS MISSION STYLE, THE BEST EXAMPLES OF WHICH ARE WIDE, QUARTER SAWN OAK MOLDINGS, WITH FUMED, STAINED, OR GILDED FINISH.  THE GOLD LEAF BEING LAID DIRECTLY ON THE GRAIN.  SOME EXAMPLES ARE EMBELLISHED WITH EGG AND DART, REEDING OR OTHER SUCH CARVING ON THE OUTER EDGE AND MINIMAL RAISED MOLDING AT THE SIGHT SURROUND.  THEY OFTEN ARE FOUND WITH A GOLD OR SILVER LINER INSERTS.   THE BEST EXAMPLES ARE PRIZED FOR THE QUALITY OF GRAIN, AND ELEGANT SIMPLICITY.
 
HISTORICALLY USED PRIMARILY FOR WORKS ON PAPER, SUCH AS PHOTOGRAPHS, PRINTS OR WATERCOLORS, CONNOISEURS ARE NOW FINDING THEM AN EXCELLENT CHOICE FOR SOME PAINTINGS.   INDEED, THERE ARE MANY EXAMPLES OF THEIR USE FOR WORKS ON BOARD OR STRETCHED CANVAS IN THE LATE 19TH AND EARLY 20THC.
